This document focuses on the deviation of thermocouples as a result of axial conduction through the thermocouple sheath (and thermowell, if applicable) in an annular reactor and a fixed-bed reactor. Three different reactor designs are considered: (i) an annular reactor, (ii) a fixed-bed reactor in which the thermocouple is directly positioned in the bed, and (iii) a fixed bed containing a thermowell. The deviations can be large in the presence of steep axial temperature gradients. Some simply applicable correlations were developed for estimating the deviation.
