Literature overview about the different fields of research and of (possible) applications of the spinning-disc reactor (SDR). The functional principles of the reactor system are explained in detail. The advantageous effects of the special hydrodynamics of the SDR on polymerisation reactions are described. The high micromixing efficiency enhances the controllability of particle synthesis. The high versatility of the reactor system was demonstrated by describing several organic syntheses and heterogeneously catalyzed reactions. The typical low residence time in conventional SDRs can be a drawback.
