Microkinetic models present a detailed, numerical representation of the (qualitative) hypotheses with respect to the behavior of a chemical reaction as a function of operating conditions. One should keep in mind that there is never a ‘voie royale’. After the basics of chemical kinetics and explanation how the often-used LHHW models can be constructed, the review explains various microkinetic model construction techniques. It depends on the system but also on the aims which techniques can be useful. Available techniques contributing to microkinetic models construction have been categorized into ‘surface science’ or ‘experimental methods’, ‘computational chemistry’, ‘regression to experimental data’ and ‘functional relationships’.
