Robinson-Mahoney reactors are in fact Stationary Catalytic Basket Reactors (SCBRs), which consist of stirred tanks with baskets to immobilized catalytic pellets used for screening of shaped catalysts or kinetic studies in LS or GLS systems. The performance of these reactors strongly depends on transport phenomena, including convection and diffusion, mixing, macroscopic flow, phase repartition, interface and intra-granular mass transfer. Methods to characterize these transport phenomena are discussed and experimental data obtained from the different methods are compared and validated. Four different hydrodynamic flow patterns have been revealed.
