Phase II of the project focused on the simulation of single pellet string reactors with arranged spherical pellets in cylindrical confining walls extended to non-isothermal scenarios including the impact of thermal effects. Since the thermal effects did not cause significant buoyancy effects, plug-flow like behaviour was only seriously undermined when thermal runaway occurred, typically starting at a local hot spot on the first pellet. Various parameters have been varied including heat of reaction, activation energy, fluid heat capacity and thermal conductivity, height of the inert bed, and number of simulated pellets.
