The direct electrification of chemical processes via renewable electricity provides an alternative strategy for replacing conventional fossil fuel combustion to provide the heat for endothermic reactions. A brief description of the principles and fundamentals of different electrification methods is firstly provided (i.e. Joule heating, induction heating and microwave heating). Applications of these methods reported in the literature are discussed in detail; applications are grouped respectively in three sub sections : (i) methane reforming reactions, (ii) cracking reactions and (iii) fast reactor heating applications. Advantages and disadvantages of each application are critically addressed in terms of efficiency, potential for scale up and possibility of retrofitting. Finally, current challenges and potential applications are discussed.
