This report contains a literature review on fermentation reactor modelling approaches proposed in the literature in bioreactor modelling. Part I of the report is written by Stephen Goldrick and Part II by Duygu Dikicioglu. Part I is the basis part and focuses on: (i) Cell culture kinetic mathematical models, (ii) Modelling cell growth: comparison of growth models, (iii) Cell nutrients for cell growth and production. (iv) Mathematical models of cellular growth: Biomass (X), Substrate (S), Product P and Bioreactor Microenvironment, (v) Control and instrumentation. Codes with kinetic models used for fermentation processes are available in a Python-based Jupyter Notebook. Part II deals with Analysis of several types of biological reactors for suspension and immobilised cultures (ideal and non-ideal mixing), active and passive immobilization of cells, solid state and multiphase fermentations, and scale-up of bioreactors.
